A Legendary USA deerskin glove maintained correctly will last ten years or more with regular riding. The same glove neglected will start to stiffen and crack within a few seasons. The difference between these outcomes is a 10-minute maintenance routine a few times a year.
Conditioning: How Often and What to Use
For actively ridden gloves — three or more times per week — condition every two to three months. Products to use: leather conditioners formulated for fine leather or garment leather. Neatsfoot oil, pure mink oil, and products like Leather Honey work well on deerskin. Products to avoid: petroleum-based products like Vaseline or WD-40, and silicone-based products.
Drying Wet Gloves Correctly
The critical rule: never use direct heat to dry leather. Radiators, heat guns, dryers, and direct sunlight all evaporate moisture rapidly, drawing the leather's natural oils out with the water. The correct approach: remove the gloves after a wet ride, reshape them by hand if they've distorted, and allow them to dry at room temperature away from direct sunlight. After the glove is fully dry, apply a light coat of conditioner.
Storage
Store deerskin gloves in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Do not store gloves in sealed plastic bags, which trap humidity and can promote mold in leather.
