Mil-spec goatskin.

Seal-brown military-spec goatskin with a genuine WWII-pattern mouton collar — the Navy's materials since 1940.

The Navy's jacket.

"USN" wind flap, bi-swing back, no side-entry pockets — the regulation configuration, not a fashion cut.

Before you fly.

Is this historically accurate?

Yes — seal-brown goatskin, genuine WWII-pattern mouton collar, bi-swing back, USN wind flap, and no side-entry pockets, per the Navy specification.

Why no handwarmer pockets?

The USN specification never included side-entry pockets, so the mil-spec jacket doesn't either.

How does the sizing run?

Regular fit on the military pattern, with the shorter aviator length. Between sizes or broad-shouldered? Verified buyers consistently recommend sizing up.

Is the collar real fur?

Genuine mouton (sheep) fur with button closure, per the original spec. The collar is fixed on this model.

Is this the Top Gun jacket?

The G-1 is the jacket type Tom Cruise wore in Top Gun (1986). This is the clean regulation version — the patched movie configuration is the Reproduction Top Gun G-1.

Naval Aviation · Issued Since 1940

Eighty-six years on flight status.
Still built to the specification.

In March 1940 the U.S. Navy issued specification M-422: a goatskin intermediate flight jacket with a mouton collar and a bi-swing back. It flew through WWII — and as the G-1, it has remained standard issue gear of the U.S. Navy ever since. Cockpit USA builds this jacket to the military-spec pattern in the USA, working from original military designs as it has since 1975.

The Material

Military-spec goatskin.
The Navy's hide since 1940.

Every specification of this jacket — from M-422 in 1940 to today's MIL-DTL-7823F — has called for the same thing: uniform seal-brown goatskin. Cockpit USA cuts this G-1 from 100% military-spec goatskin.

The collar is genuine mouton fur on the original WWII-era pattern, closed with buttons — not a synthetic substitute. Inside: nylon lining with an interior snap pocket.

Construction

Regulation, not interpretation.

"USN" wind flap

The front zipper closes over a wind flap perforated "USN" — the Navy's mark, cut into the jacket itself.

Bi-swing action back

The pleated back the spec has required since 1940: full reach in a cockpit, no ride-up.

Vented underarm gussets

Underarm gussets with ventilation holes move air and free the shoulders.

Button-down flap pockets

Two front flap pockets with button closure, plus a hidden pencil pocket.

No side-entry pockets

The USN specification never had handwarmer pockets. Neither does this jacket.

Knit waist and cuffs

Elastic knit waistband and cuffs seal the intermediate zone the jacket was built for.
