The break-in experience for leather motorcycle gloves depends almost entirely on the leather type. Cowhide gloves require real work before they become comfortable. Deerskin gloves require almost none.

Why Cowhide Needs Breaking In

Cowhide in its natural state is a relatively stiff material. A new cowhide glove resists the hand's natural shape — the fingers don't flex fully, the palm panel doesn't conform to the hand's curves, and the leather at the knuckles creates noticeable resistance through the range of motion needed for riding.

The Deerskin Difference

Deerskin's fiber structure is fundamentally different from cowhide. It is naturally supple and pliable — it doesn't need to be broken down into a workable shape because it starts in one. A Legendary USA deerskin glove is comfortable on the first ride. The Spitfire, Haymaker, ILL DOZER — all of them work correctly from day one without a break-in investment.

Breaking In Cowhide Gloves: What Works

  • Wear them consistently: The single most effective break-in method is riding in the gloves regularly.
  • Condition before first ride: Applying a light coat of leather conditioner before the first wear softens the fibers slightly.
  • Flex the gloves by hand: Before a ride, work the glove through its range of motion.

What Not to Do During Break-In

  • Soaking in water — damages leather
  • Applying heat — dries out natural oils and causes cracking

Deerskin: ready to ride from day one, no break-in required.
