Big and Tall Motorcycle Vests: Sizing Past 2XL

Big and tall motorcycle vests sized to 5XL and a 56 inch chest, plus a Long body length option. How to measure and when to switch to numbered sizing.

Most vest size charts stop at 2XL and leave a lot of riders guessing. Ours do not. Lettered styles run through 5XL, numbered styles run to a 56 chest, and one style adds two inches of body length independent of the chest size. Here is what is actually available past 2XL and how to pick the right number.

How Far the Sizing Actually Goes

Our men's vests use two sizing systems. Lettered styles run S through 5XL, which covers roughly a 36 to a 60 inch chest depending on cut. Numbered styles are sized directly by chest measurement and run 36 through 56, with a few starting at 38. Nothing on the men's side requires a special order to reach 5XL.

On the women's side the ceiling is higher still: the Lilly Purple Leather Vest ($119.99) is offered through 8XL, and most women's styles reach 5XL. If you have been told motorcycle vests do not come in your size, that has more to do with who you were shopping from than with the category.

Numbered Sizing Is the Better Path for a Large Chest

If your chest is over about 48 inches, buy a numbered style. Lettered sizing compresses a lot of range into each step past 2XL, so a 3XL and a 4XL can be four inches apart, and you end up choosing between a vest that will not snap and a vest that hangs. Numbered vests remove the guesswork because the size is the measurement.

The Reckless Outlaw Aged Leather Vest ($239) runs 38 through 56 in aged full grain leather, and the BECK 566 Horsehide Vest ($440) covers the same 38 to 56 range in horsehide with gun pockets. Both are cut with enough front panel to close flat at the top of the range rather than pulling at the snaps.

Chest Size and Body Length Are Separate Problems

Plenty of riders do not need a bigger chest measurement, they need more length. A vest that fits the chest but stops above the belt line rides up every time you lean forward, and the back panel lifts away from your jacket. Going up a chest size to gain an inch of length gives you a vest that is loose everywhere.

The Legendary Men's Leather Club Vest ($179.99) solves this directly. It ships in S through 5XL with a separate Body Length option, Regular or Long 2 inch, so you can hold your chest size and add the length. If you are over six foot two, order the Long.

How to Measure Yourself

Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, with the tape level all the way around and your arms down. Wear the layer you actually ride in, because a hoodie or a flannel adds one to two inches and a vest that only closes over a t-shirt is a summer-only vest.

For numbered styles, order the number the tape gives you. For lettered styles, check the specific chart rather than assuming, since cut varies between a fitted club style and a traditional straight-cut vest. The vest sizing guide covers the general fit rules if you want the full walkthrough.

Do Vests Run Small or Large

Traditional straight-cut vests run close to true. Cropped and fitted club styles run smaller through the chest and shorter in the body by design, so a rider who takes a 2XL in a traditional cut often needs a 3XL in a fitted one. Side-lace styles buy back two to three inches of adjustment, which is worth having if you are between sizes or your weight moves through the year.

Denim runs the same as leather in our sizing and gives you a little more give across the back. The Ole Blue Denim Vest ($65) covers S through 5XL and is the low-cost way to test your size before committing to leather.

Where to Start

Measure your chest over your riding layer. If the number is 48 or higher, shop numbered styles. If you need length rather than width, order the club vest in Long. If you want to confirm the fit before spending real money, start with denim. Browse the full Made in USA motorcycle vest collection to compare cuts, and orders over $150 ship free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are motorcycle vests available in big and tall sizes?

Yes. Our lettered men's styles run S through 5XL and numbered styles run 36 to 56 by chest measurement, with no special order required. One style, the Legendary Men's Leather Club Vest, adds a Long 2 inch body length option separate from the chest size, which covers riders who need length rather than width. Women's styles reach 5XL, and the Lilly Purple Leather Vest goes through 8XL.

What is the largest size available in leather motorcycle vests?

On the men's side, 5XL in lettered sizing and a 56 chest in numbered sizing, which are roughly equivalent. On the women's side, 8XL on the Lilly Purple Leather Vest. Denim vests match the leather range at 5XL. If your chest measures above 56 inches, a custom order is the route rather than a stock size.

How do I size a motorcycle vest for a large chest?

Above roughly 48 inches, choose a numbered style and order the number your tape gives you. Lettered sizing steps get wide past 2XL, so a 3XL and 4XL can sit four inches apart and neither one lands right. Numbered vests are sized directly by chest measurement, which removes the guesswork. Measure over the layer you ride in, not over a t-shirt.

Do motorcycle vests run small or large?

Traditional straight-cut vests run close to true to size. Cropped and fitted club styles are cut deliberately smaller through the chest and shorter in the body, so riders often move up one size when switching from a traditional cut to a fitted one. Side-lace styles give two to three inches of adjustment, which helps if you are between sizes.

What if I need more body length rather than a bigger chest?

Do not size up the chest to gain length, because you end up loose everywhere. The Legendary Men's Leather Club Vest offers a Long 2 inch body length as a separate option from S through 5XL, so you keep your chest size and add the length. Riders over about six foot two generally want the Long, especially if the vest sits over a jacket.

Do denim motorcycle vests come in big and tall sizes?

They do. Our denim vests run S through 5XL, the same range as the lettered leather styles, and denim gives slightly more across the back than leather does. At $65 the Ole Blue Denim Vest is also a practical way to confirm your size and preferred cut before ordering a leather vest at four times the price.

The size exists. Measure your chest over the layer you actually ride in, use numbered sizing once you pass 48 inches, and treat length as its own decision rather than something to solve by going wider.
