Each size is graded in chest, length, and sleeve independently. A 44 is not a 42 scaled up by a fixed percentage. It is a proportion, drafted so the armhole, the shoulder yoke, and the sleeve pitch all move together.
What to do: Start with your actual chest measurement taken across your back rather than pulled tight, then your sleeve length and torso length. We will tell you which stock size lands closest and what tweaks would dial it in.
3. Custom Sleeve Length Adjustments
Arm length is where most jackets fail riders. Standard sizing assumes you are a certain height with proportional limbs. In reality people are all different. We adjust sleeve length in half inch increments. Need them a half inch shorter? Done. An inch longer because you have reach? That is custom work, and we do it as part of the build.
This matters once you are on the bike. Sleeves that are too long bunch at the wrist and fight your throttle hand. Too short and you have exposed wrist every time your arms extend toward the bars.
What to do: Measure from your shoulder point to your wrist bone with your arm slightly bent, the way it sits on the bars. Give us that number and we will build to it.

This is where fit gets personal. Some riders are built wide but short. Others are tall and lean. Your jacket should not make you choose between comfortable shoulders and drowning in leather.
We adjust chest width independently of length. If you need a 46 inch chest but the jacket is too long, you do not have to accept the extra length. If you are 6 foot 2 with a 42 inch chest, we do not force you into a 46 just to get the body length right.
Torso length customization is available on every custom build. We set it from your proportions and your riding position rather than from a chart someone drew in an office.
What to do: Wear a fitted jacket and have someone measure from your shoulder point straight down to where you want the hem to sit. For most riders that is at the hip bone or slightly below once you are in riding position.
5. Waist and Hip Modifications
A jacket that is comfortable in the chest can still be sloppy at the sides. We can taper the sides up to two inches without changing how the shoulders sit, and you will feel the difference in how the jacket moves with you.
Harley riders know this one. You are leaning into turns and shifting weight constantly. A jacket that closes down at the waist moves with you. A loose, baggy fit pulls and twists instead.
Hip width gets adjusted the same way. If you need more room through the hips but want a tighter waist, that is a standard modification.
What to do: Measure your waist and hip at their widest points. Tell us whether you want the waist brought in for a fitted look or prefer a relaxed fit over layers.
6. Shoulder Width Tailoring and Strap Adjustments
Shoulder width is the one measurement you cannot fake in a riding jacket. Too narrow and the seams sit inboard and bind. Too wide and the whole jacket slides around on you. Getting this right changes how everything else hangs.
We measure your shoulder point to shoulder point and build to that number. Strap adjustments, meaning underarm gusset straps, chest straps, and side straps, can be repositioned or shortened in the custom build so the jacket stays put at speed.
What to do: Have someone measure between your shoulder joints with your arms relaxed at your sides. That is your starting point.

Leather Jacket Fit and Sizing Questions, Answered

How should a leather motorcycle jacket fit?
A riding jacket should feel snug in the shoulders and chest, with just enough room to close a fist inside the chest when zipped over a t-shirt. The shoulder seam should land on the point of your shoulder bone, not down your bicep. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone with your arms hanging straight, which puts them right at the base of your hand once you reach for the bars. The hem should cover your belt line when you lean forward so no gap opens across your lower back.
The test that matters most is the riding position test. Put the jacket on, close it, and lean forward as though you are on the bike. If the collar chokes, the shoulders pull tight across your back, or the sleeves ride halfway up your forearms, the jacket is too small for the way you actually sit. A jacket that fits well standing up but binds in riding position is the single most common sizing mistake we correct.
Leather should also feel slightly tight when new. Heritage hide is not a stretch fabric, but it does mold. A jacket that is roomy on day one will be loose in a year.
What size leather motorcycle jacket do I need for a 44 inch chest?
If your actual chest measures 44 inches, order the size 44. Do you size up a leather motorcycle jacket to layer underneath?
Usually not by a full size. Most riders who size up end up with a jacket that is loose in the shoulders all summer to solve a problem that only exists in January.
Here is the practical rule. A t-shirt or a light flannel needs no size change. A hooded sweatshirt or an armored riding shirt under the leather is worth one size up, or better, a custom build that adds an inch through the chest and back while keeping your correct shoulder width and sleeve length. That is the whole advantage of buying custom rather than buying big: you get the extra room where the layer actually sits instead of everywhere at once.

Do leather motorcycle jackets stretch over time?
Yes, but less than people expect, and not everywhere equally. Horsehide and heavy cowhide relax and mold rather than stretch. Expect roughly a half inch of give through the chest and back over the first season of regular wear, concentrated where your body flexes: the elbows, the shoulder blades, the front of the chest. Length and shoulder width barely move at all.
That is why we tell riders to buy snug rather than comfortable. A jacket that feels perfect in the shop will feel roomy in six months. A jacket that feels slightly tight in the shoulders on day one, but does not restrict your reach to the bars, is the one that fits you in year two.
What does not happen: leather does not shrink back if you overstuff it, and it does not grow two sizes. If a jacket is genuinely too small across the shoulders, break-in will not fix it.
What leather motorcycle jackets fit big and tall riders?

What about a tall rider with a big chest?
This is the classic case where off the rack fails. Buying up to fit the chest gives you a jacket that is correct in the body and wrong in the shoulders and sleeves. Buying to fit the shoulders leaves you unable to close it.
The custom build separates those measurements. We take your chest at its widest, your shoulder point to shoulder point, your sleeve length from shoulder to wrist bone, and your torso length from shoulder to hem, and grade each one on its own. A 6 foot 4 rider with a 50 inch chest and a 36 inch sleeve gets exactly that, not a 52 with the sleeves let out.

What is the best leather motorcycle jacket for short riders?
Shorter riders have the opposite problem: the chest size is available, but the body length and sleeve length that come with it swallow you. A stock 40 cut for a 5 foot 11 frame will hang past the hips and cover your hands on a 5 foot 6 rider.
Two things solve it. First, choose a jacket whose base pattern is already shorter in the body.
