Vintage Style + CE-Rated Protection: The Layered Approach
Most heritage American leather motorcycle jackets aren’t whole-garment CE-certified. They’re built around classic styling, full-grain leather, and abrasion resistance — not the European EN 1621 testing protocols that produce CE certifications.
That doesn’t mean you have to choose between vintage style and certified protection. The cleanest path: layer a CE-certified armored riding shirt under your heritage leather jacket. The jacket maintains its classic look. The armored shirt does the impact-protection work.

How to Add CE Protection
Two main approaches:
- Armored riding shirt under the jacket: CE-certified shoulder, elbow, and back armor in a comfortable cotton or flannel shirt. Wear the heritage jacket on top. Browse our armored riding shirts and flannels
- Armor-ready jacket: Heritage cuts with built-in pockets sized for aftermarket CE inserts. Browse our armor-ready motorcycle jackets

What CE Ratings Mean
EN 1621-1 covers limb armor (shoulders, elbows, knees, hips). EN 1621-2 covers back protectors with two performance levels (Level 1 and Level 2 — Level 2 is the higher protection grade).
The Right Combination for Long Touring
Most touring riders we work with run:
- BECK 732 horsehide jacket or A-2 flight jacket as the outer layer
- CE-rated armored shirt with shoulder, elbow, and back protection underneath
- American deerskin riding gloves with Aramid lining for abrasion resistance
- DOT-certified Daytona half or three-quarter helmet
Heritage style on top. Real certified protection underneath.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are vintage motorcycle jackets CE-certified?
Most heritage American leather jackets aren’t whole-garment CE-certified. The path to CE protection is layering an armored shirt underneath, or choosing an armor-ready jacket with built-in pockets.
What does CE Level 2 back armor mean?
Level 2 back protectors transmit roughly half the impact force of Level 1 in standardized testing. Level 2 is the higher protection grade.
Can I add CE armor to any jacket?
Only if it has built-in pockets sized for inserts. Otherwise, layer an armored shirt underneath.
Does layering an armored shirt work in summer?
Yes. Many armored shirts use mesh or breathable cotton. Pair with a perforated leather jacket for hot-weather riding.
Is heritage leather still useful for protection without armor?
Yes — heavyweight full-grain leather provides strong abrasion resistance in slides. CE armor specifically addresses impact, which is a separate factor.
