American Flight Jacket Heritage
The American flight jacket lineage runs from WWI through current military service. The patterns that defined the genre — A-2, G-1, B-3 — are still in production today by heritage U.S. makers using construction methods that haven’t fundamentally changed in 80 years.
The Three Heritage Cuts
A-2 Flight Jacket
U.S. Army Air Force pattern, standard issue from 1931 to 1943. Defined by leather standing collar, knit cuffs and waistband, slim cut, single front zip. The classic American flight jacket silhouette. Browse our A-2 leather flight jackets by Cockpit USA.
G-1 Flight Jacket
U.S. Navy/Marine pattern, in continuous service since the 1930s. Defined by mouton fur collar, knit cuffs and waistband, bi-swing back for cockpit mobility. Worn by the Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team. The Legendary Hellcat G-1 is the most popular cut in our lineup.
B-3 Sheepskin Bomber Jacket
WWII bomber crew flight jacket for sub-zero altitudes. Full sheepskin pelts with leatherized shell, oversized shearling collar with double buckle straps. Browse our sheepskin bomber jackets and read our deep dive on B-3 jacket differences.
Choosing the Right Cut for Riding
- Year-round riding: A-2 is the most versatile for street and cruiser use
- Cold weather: G-1 with mouton collar adds significant warmth without bulk
- Sub-zero / heavy winter: B-3 sheepskin handles anything North American winters throw at it
Sizing Heritage Flight Jackets
Original WWII-era sizing doesn’t translate directly to modern measurements. Reproductions size for modern bodies but maintain the original proportions. Order your true chest size for most cuts; size up if you regularly layer over heavy shirts. Sleeve length should reach just past the wrist crease when arm is extended.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between an A-2 and a G-1?
A-2 is the U.S. Army Air Force pattern with a leather standing collar. G-1 is the U.S. Navy/Marine pattern with a mouton fur collar, knit cuffs, and bi-swing back.
Are reproduction flight jackets worth it?
For most riders, yes. Reproductions are typically built to better and more consistent material standards than thrift-shop vintage finds, with reliable modern hardware.
How long does a quality American flight jacket last?
20+ years with proper care. Many of our long-time customers ride in flight jackets they bought decades ago.
Can I wear a flight jacket on a motorcycle?
Yes. Many riders prefer A-2 and G-1 cuts on the bike. The shoulder articulation and forward-cut sleeves work well on the bars.
How should I care for a heritage leather flight jacket?
Standard quality leather care — condition twice a year, store on a wide hanger, avoid prolonged heat or saturation. See our leather care guide.
