Construction & Materials

The BECK® 588 is the denim-silhouette version of the BECK® horsehide vest — side lacing and multi-panel stitching in 1.4–1.6mm front quarter horsehide, the heaviest leather weight in the BECK® vest lineup. The denim-style proportions in horsehide provide rain resistance and abrasion resistance that denim at any weight cannot match.

1.4–1.6mm front quarter horsehide is heavier than the 566 or 882 — stiffer on first wear, longer break-in, greater protection and longevity over the life of the vest. Two zippered leather-lined front pockets. Two internal leather-lined pistol pockets, approximately 9 inches deep. Double-stitched seams throughout. Double-sided interfacing for structure. Poly twill liner. Perma Core thread by American & Efird (A&E). Lifetime Guarantee from Legendary USA. Made in the USA.

Longer than the 566 — this is 1.4–1.6mm hide, the heaviest in the line. It starts stiff and gives gradually with riding.

How does the side lacing work?

The laces adjust the torso roughly an inch either way — out over layers, in over a t-shirt.

Should I size up to wear it over a hoodie?

Questions

Before you ride.

How long does the 588 take to break in?

Longer than the 566 — this is 1.4–1.6mm hide, the heaviest in the line. It starts stiff and gives gradually with riding. That density is the point.

How does the side lacing work?

The laces adjust the torso roughly an inch either way — let them out over layers in fall, take them in over a t-shirt in summer.

Can I put patches on it?

The 588's back is multi-panel in the denim-vest tradition — patches work, but seams cross the canvas. Check the back-panel photos or ask us before your stitcher starts.

Should I size up to wear it over a hoodie?

No — order by your actual chest measurement. The cut already allows for a flannel or hoodie. Riding heavy layers on a bagger all winter? Take one up.

What's the shipping and return policy?

Side laces make a big difference

Denim style cut in horsehide is a combo I haven't seen elsewhere. The side lacing let me tighten it up a little more than I expected and the multi panel stitching looks sharp. It is the heaviest vest I've owned so give it some time to soften. Rain beaded right off it on the ride home last week.

Solid 588 — heavier than I thought and that's a good thing

Wasn't expecting quite this much weight when I unboxed the 588 but once I strapped it on I understood why. That front quarter horsehide is thick. Feels like armor compared to the cowhide vest I've been riding in for five years.

Looks better on than I expected

The 588 is a heavier vest than I expected, and the grain on the hide is something to look at.

Thank you! The BECK 588 horsehide vest uses premium heavyweight leather selected for both durability and character. We’re glad the grain stood out to you because no two hides are exactly alike.

Owned it six months — here's the real breakdown

Bought the 588 back in November and I've put about 4,000 miles on it since. First couple weeks the leather was stiff enough that I had to deliberately work my arms to get it moving. By month two it started to feel like it was made for me. The horsehide surface has developed a slight sheen at the shoulder edges where my jacket sleeves contact it — looks natural, not worn out. Concealed carry pockets are positioned well and the design keeps everything tight against the body so there's no shifting at speed. I've had vest snaps fail on cheaper gear before; nothing has moved on this one. BECK's been building riding gear in the USA for almost a century and the 588 shows why that matters. If you're looking for a vest you'll still be wearing in ten years, this is it.

best riding shirt

Huge fan of this piece I got, been riding for years and always wanted a horsehide riding shirt opposed to a cowhide or even worse lamb.

Exactly the style and horsehide leather I was looking for

Quick thank you, I had get this custom because I am 6'4 340 and it was a simple process, Kimberly helped with my measurements, the owner Chris confirmed what they would be doing to modify their patterns to compensate for my dimensions. It took about 2 weeks from time of order to received my vests. Turned out to be perfect and well deserving of a 5 start review.

I only wear BECK leathers now and buying this motorcycle vest did me right

I was searching the site for a BECK vest and didn't see many, wasnt sure if i would like this pattern but turns out it's become a favorite. been wearing it now for 2 months fully patched and i get compliments all the time. hoping to save for their new 501 trucker BECK vest, because that looks very nice as well. I would recommend this vest to anyone who understands what horsehide is and how it's different.

Stylish and Durable

I'm impressed with it. The combination of horsehide and denim style gives it a unique and stylish appearance that stands out among other motorcycle vests. The horsehide leather feels premium and durable, which is essential for motorcycle gear. It provides excellent abrasion resistance, giving me peace of mind during rides. The fit is accurate, and the vest allows for easy adjustment with its side laces. The craftsmanship is top-notch, with well-stitched seams and reinforced edges. The hardware, like snaps, also seems sturdy and reliable.

Very nice Vest!

High quality leather. Nice pockets. I Would buy it again. This product is well-packaged. When I ride in the summer or warmer periods of time, I usually wear a tee shirt and my leather vest. After putting thousands of miles on the road on my bike (A Harley) I have been pelted with small rocks, bugs, birds, and many other things that tend to hurt hands, and your body if you are not prepared. I always wear leather gloves and usually a leather vest. I saw this vest and thought I would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised with this product and the price point. It is a quality leather with enough thickness to provide a sufficient level of protection for most of the things that tend to come off the road. Overall a quality product that I would strongly recommend.

Excellent Quality

this is a quality vest, The vest is well made. and fits very well for the price. I have looked at leather vests which cost way more and didn’t look or fit near as well. I bought this one for everyday use. Worn with a jacket I can take off the jacket when inside and still be covered. Right now I’m well satisfied with the vest

Classic Good Looks, Outstanding Quality

Very good stitching, and the leather has a good feel not being overly stiff. Very happy with the fit and finish. It is a great vest for the cool mornings to throw on over a hoodie.
