Most returns come down to one thing: the buyer ordered a number without knowing what that number measures. Leather motorcycle jacket fit is not standardized, and Legendary USA sells jackets built on two different sizing conventions, so a size 44 does not mean the same thing on both. This guide publishes the actual measurements behind Legendary USA jacket sizing so you can order once.
The two sizing conventions, and why it matters
BECK Northeaster Flying Togs, the Legendary USA house horsehide line, is sized by body chest measurement. A BECK 44 is cut for a rider whose chest measures 44 inches. The ease is engineered into the pattern, so you order your real measurement and do not add anything.
Cockpit USA, which Legendary USA carries as an authorized dealer, is sized by finished garment measurement. A Cockpit USA size 44 measures 50 inches around the closed garment and is built for a 43 to 45 inch body. The number on the label is the jacket, not you.
Both lines are built to the same Legendary USA layering allowance: 4 inches of ease over a t-shirt, 5.5 inches over a light layer, and 7 inches over a heavy layer. That allowance is what separates a jacket you can ride in from one that binds across the back when you reach for the bars.
What size do I order for a 44 inch chest?
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, with the tape level and a t-shirt on. Then read across:
| Your chest | BECK size | Cockpit USA numbered | Cockpit USA lettered | Cockpit garment chest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 37 to 39" | 38 | 38 | not stocked | n/a |
| 40 to 42" | 40 or 42 | 40 or 42 | S | 47" |
| 43 to 45" | 44 | 44 | M | 50" |
| 46 to 48" | 46 or 48 | 46 or 48 | L | 53" |
| 49 to 51" | 50 | 50 | XL | 56" |
| 52 to 54" | 52 or 54 | 52 or 54 | 2XL | 59" |
| 55 to 57" | 56 | 56 where offered | 3XL | 62" |
| 58 to 60" | Custom | 58 or 60 on B-3 | 4XL | 65" |
| 61 to 63" | Custom | not offered | 5XL | 68" |
Numbered sizes above are graded from the Cockpit USA A-2 chart. Which numbers a given model stocks varies, so check the size selector on the product page.
So a 44 inch chest orders a 44 in BECK, a 44 in Cockpit USA numbered sizing, and a Medium in Cockpit USA lettered sizing. Three different-looking answers, one body.
Do you size up to layer underneath?
On BECK you do not. The 4 to 7 inches of layering allowance is already cut into the pattern, so sizing up puts a broken-in horsehide jacket two layers away from your body and the shoulder seam drops off the joint. Order your measured chest.
On Cockpit USA lettered sizing the body range is what to match, not the garment chest. If you ride year round over a heavy hoodie, measure over the hoodie and use that number against the body range column.
The one case for going up a size in either line is a rider who is between numbers and carries the difference in the shoulders rather than the waist. Shoulder width is the one dimension leather will not give you back.
Do leather motorcycle jackets stretch over time?
Partly, and not where most riders expect. The chest and the sleeves relax. The shoulders and the back length do not change at all, which is why a jacket that is tight across the shoulders on day one is the wrong jacket, not an unbroken-in one.
How much relaxes depends on the hide. The 1.3mm front quarter horsehide Legendary USA uses on the BECK Northeaster line does not stretch the way cowhide does. Horsehide breaks in by softening and creasing rather than growing, so the fit you order is close to the fit you keep. Cowhide is stiffer and does not stretch significantly either. Lambskin is the softest and most flexible of the three and relaxes the most across the chest, which is why Legendary USA sizes its lambskin vests and jackets true to measurement rather than telling you to size down.
Practical rule from the Legendary USA fit data: if the jacket closes and you can cross your arms in front of you without the back panel pulling, it will be right in a month. If it will not close, no amount of break-in fixes it.
Short riders, tall riders, and big chests
Chest is only half the fit. Back length is what decides whether a jacket looks right on you, and it is the number almost nobody publishes.
Shorter riders. The BECK Northeaster pattern runs about an inch shorter in the back than the Cockpit USA lambskin A-2 at a comparable chest: a BECK 44 has a 26 inch back, while the Cockpit Medium that fits the same 43 to 45 inch chest has a 27 inch back. Across the BECK range the back runs 23 inches at a 36 to 27 inches at a 56, so it grows by only 4 inches while the chest grows by 20. Riders under about 5 foot 8 usually land better in BECK for that reason.
Taller riders and long arms. Cockpit USA numbered sizing adds a half inch of sleeve per size, from 36.5 inches at a 34 up to 42 inches at a 56. BECK adds sleeve more slowly, 34 inches at a 36 to 37 inches at a 56. If your sleeve length is the problem rather than your chest, the Cockpit USA numbered chart is the one that scales with you.
Big and tall. Cockpit USA lettered sizing runs to 5XL for a 61 to 63 inch chest, and the Cockpit USA G-1 Antique Lambskin flight jacket adds a 6XL. In numbered sizing the Cockpit USA B-3 sheepskin bombers go to size 60. Legendary USA also keeps a standing extended size jacket collection for 3XL through 5XL so you are not filtering the whole catalog to find what comes in your size.
Are leather motorcycle jackets available in custom sizes?
Yes, and at Legendary USA it is a checkout option rather than a phone call. Ten jackets and riding shirts carry a made to measure size option, including the BECK 202, BECK 302, BECK 501 Trucker, BECK 666, BECK 732 in black and brown, BECK 777, BECK 999, the Legendary Black Hills, and the Legendary Midnight Run riding shirt. Three vests carry it as well.
Custom is the right call when your chest and your back length disagree with each other, when your sleeve runs past a 37 inch BECK 56, or when your chest is past 57 inches, which is where the BECK graded numbered sizes stop.

Leather motorcycle jacket fit questions, answered
How should a leather motorcycle jacket fit?
Snug through the chest with the zipper closed, with the shoulder seam sitting on the point of your shoulder and no pulling across the back when you reach forward to the bars. Sleeves should reach the base of your thumb in a riding position, which is longer than they look standing up. Legendary USA builds 4 inches of ease over a t-shirt into its jacket patterns, so a correctly sized jacket feels close but never tight.
What size leather motorcycle jacket do I need for a 44 inch chest?
A size 44 in the BECK Northeaster line, which is sized by body chest. A size 44 in Cockpit USA numbered sizing, which measures 50 inches around the finished garment and is built for a 43 to 45 inch body. A Medium in Cockpit USA lettered sizing.
Do you size up a leather motorcycle jacket to layer underneath?
Not on BECK, where the layering allowance is already in the pattern: 4 inches over a t-shirt, 5.5 inches over a light layer, 7 inches over a heavy layer. On Cockpit USA lettered sizing, measure over the layer you actually ride in and match that number to the body range.
Do leather motorcycle jackets stretch over time?
The chest and sleeves relax, the shoulders and back length do not. The 1.3mm front quarter horsehide on the BECK Northeaster line breaks in by softening rather than growing, so it holds its ordered size. Cowhide does not stretch significantly either. Lambskin is the softest of the three and relaxes the most across the chest.
What leather motorcycle jackets fit big and tall riders?
Cockpit USA lettered sizing runs to 5XL for a 61 to 63 inch chest and the Cockpit USA G-1 Antique Lambskin adds a 6XL. Cockpit USA B-3 sheepskin bombers run to size 60 in numbered sizing. Legendary USA also keeps an extended size jacket collection covering 3XL through 5XL.
Are leather motorcycle jackets available in custom sizes?
Yes. Legendary USA offers a made to measure size option on ten jackets and riding shirts, including the BECK 202, 302, 501 Trucker, 666, 732, 777 and 999, the Legendary Black Hills and the Legendary Midnight Run. It is selected at checkout like any other size.
