Built for fighter cockpits.

A Spitfire's cockpit had no room for the full Irvin — the fighter weight cut the bulk, kept the shearling.

The RAF patch.

Embroidered at the back collar, beneath the strap — the signature of the pattern.

Made in America.

Welted seams, waist belt, grommets, zip cuffs. Sizes 34–56.

Short-sheared shearling, tan pile

Short-sheared shearling, tan pile

Warmth, minus the bulk.

Short-shearing keeps the insulation and cuts the mass — significantly less bulk than the full RAF or a B-3.

Fighter Weight or full RAF?

Same Irvin lineage, adopted by the RAF in 1938. The full RAF is the bomber-crew heavyweight; the Fighter Weight cuts the shearling shorter for the tight cockpits of Spitfires and Hurricanes, per Cockpit.

How warm is it?

Short-sheared shearling — genuinely warm with significantly less bulk than the full RAF or a B-3.

What's at the back collar?

The embroidered RAF patch, beneath the back collar strap.

Sheepskin · The Fighter's Version

The bombers got the big Irvin.
The fighters got this one.

The Irvin flying jacket — adopted by the RAF in 1938 — protected bomber crews magnificently and fit fighter cockpits terribly. Cockpit USA builds the answer: the Fighter Weight, the Irvin pattern in reduced-weight, short-sheared shearling made for the tight confines of Spitfires and Hurricanes where the full jacket restricted movement, per Cockpit. The pattern language stays British: leather-welted seams, buckle throat latch, the embroidered RAF patch beneath the back collar strap, underarm ventilation grommets, a leather waist belt, and heavy-duty zip cuffs. The shearling antiques with wear. Sizes 34–56. Made in the USA.

The Material

Weight was
the enemy.

In a Spitfire's cockpit, every inch of bulk fought the pilot. The Fighter Weight solves it at the material: the same shearling protection, sheared short.

With wear, the pile antiques — the patina of the British line, developing at its own pace.

What Customers Say

Questions

Before you fly.

What's the difference from the full RAF Sheepskin?

Weight. Both descend from the Irvin pattern adopted by the RAF in 1938; the Fighter Weight uses short-sheared shearling at reduced weight for the tight cockpits of Spitfires and Hurricanes, per Cockpit. Warm, but wearable in a seat with no spare inches.

Why did fighter pilots need a different jacket?

The full Irvin protected bomber crews standing and moving through unpressurized aircraft — but restricted movement in a fighter's cramped cockpit, where a pilot's arms did everything.

Fighter Weight or B-6?

The same idea from two air forces: lighter shearling for pilots who needed to move. The B-6 is the American trainer version; this is the British fighter version, belt and RAF patch included.

How does the shearling age?

It develops an antiqued patina with wear, per the British line's character.
