How to Use Leather Vest Extenders on a Motorcycle Vest

Leather vest extenders add 2 to 5 inches of room to a motorcycle vest. Here is how to attach them, which type to choose, and when to size up instead.

Leather vest extenders are short straps with snaps at each end that sit between the two halves of your vest closure and add room to the front. Legendary USA's leather extenders add 2 to 4 inches, and the chain-style Buffalo Nickel extenders add 5 inches. They let you wear a leather vest over a jacket in cold weather, or open it up for air on a warm ride.

What vest extenders do and why riders use them

A vest extender widens the front opening of your vest by the length of the extender. It does not change the vest itself, so the armholes, the back panel, and any patches stay where they are. That is the reason extenders are popular with riders who wear a vest over a leather jacket: you keep the vest you own and gain the room the extra layer needs.

The other common use is the opposite season. In summer, an extender lets the vest hang open a little for ventilation without taking it off. The same pair of extenders handles both jobs.

How to attach leather vest extenders in four steps

Attaching extenders takes about a minute and needs no tools. The method is the same for the leather pair and the chain pair, as long as your vest closes with snaps.

  1. Unsnap the vest. Open the front closures so the two halves hang free.
  2. Snap one end of the extender to the vest's snap stud. Use the stud on one side of the front, at the closure you want to extend.
  3. Snap the other end to the matching snap on the opposite side. The extender now bridges the gap between the two halves.
  4. Repeat at each closure you want to widen. Extenders are sold in pairs, so one pair covers two closures. Put them on with the vest on, and check that the vest hangs level before you ride.

Fit the extenders over the layer you will actually be wearing. Forcing a vest closed over a jacket puts strain on the snaps, which is the problem extenders are meant to remove.

Leather extenders vs Buffalo Nickel extenders

Both types do the same job, and the difference is length, weight, and look. The leather vest extenders add 2 to 4 inches, use black snap hardware, and weigh about a third of what chain extenders weigh, according to the product page. The Genuine Buffalo Nickel vest extenders add 5 inches on a 5 inch chain and use genuine antique Buffalo Nickels as snap covers.

Detail Leather extenders Buffalo Nickel extenders
Added room 2 to 4 inches, adjustable 5 inches
Construction Genuine leather 5 inch chain with antique Buffalo Nickel snap covers
Weight About one third the weight of chain extenders Heavier, chain construction
Best for Wearing a vest over a jacket, light and low profile Riders who want the western hardware look and the most added room

Both are made in the USA and sold in pairs. If you only need a little room, the adjustable leather pair is the lighter, quieter choice.

Extenders vs side lacing vs a bigger size

Extenders add front-opening room, side lacing adjusts the chest, and a bigger size changes the whole vest. Each solves a different problem. Pick the one that matches yours.

When extenders are the right fix

Use extenders when your vest fits well on its own and you only need extra room for a seasonal layer. Many Legendary USA vests, including the Legendary club style leather vest, also have side lacing that allows 2 to 4 inches of chest adjustment. If your vest has lacing, loosen it first and see if that solves the problem before you buy anything.

When to size up instead

If the vest is tight across the shoulders, the armholes bind when you reach for the bars, or the back panel pulls, extenders will not fix it. Extenders widen the front only. For those problems, re-measure and read our motorcycle vest sizing guide before you reorder.

One more check: confirm your vest closes with snaps that match the extender hardware. The leather extenders list universal black snap hardware that fits most vest closures, and the Buffalo Nickel pair lists fit for standard snap vests. If your vest uses a hidden-snap or zipper front, ask us before you order. Our hidden snap vest buying guide explains how those closures differ.

Layering a vest over a jacket the right way

A vest over a leather jacket is a bulky layer, and bulk is what extenders are for. Once the vest is extended, check three things: that you can lift both arms to the handlebars without the vest riding up, that the extenders sit flat without twisting, and that nothing hangs low enough to catch on the seat. For more on what goes under a vest, see how to layer under a motorcycle vest, and for a heavier cold-season vest see the winter motorcycle vest guide.

The short version

If your vest fits and you only need room for a layer, buy extenders: leather for 2 to 4 inches and a light feel, Buffalo Nickel chain for 5 inches and the western look. If your vest binds at the shoulders or the back, buy a bigger size instead. Either way, snap them on over the gear you will actually wear, and check the fit before you ride.

Frequently asked questions

What are leather vest extenders?
Leather vest extenders are short straps with snaps on each end that bridge the front of a vest closure and add room. Legendary USA's leather extenders add 2 to 4 inches and its Buffalo Nickel chain extenders add 5 inches. They are sold in pairs and made in the USA.
How do you put vest extenders on a motorcycle vest?
Unsnap the vest closure, snap one end of the extender to the snap stud on one side, then snap the other end to the matching snap on the opposite side. Repeat at the second closure with the second extender. Fit them over the layer you will actually wear, then check the vest hangs level.
How much room do vest extenders add?
Legendary USA's leather vest extenders add an adjustable 2 to 4 inches of room. The Genuine Buffalo Nickel vest extenders add 5 inches on a 5 inch chain. Each is sold as a pair, so one pair extends two closures on the vest.
Can you wear a leather vest over a leather jacket?
Yes, but a vest cut for a shirt usually will not close over a jacket without help. Vest extenders add room at the front so the vest can be worn over a jacket in cold weather. If it still binds at the shoulders or armholes, go up a size instead.
Do vest extenders work with any vest?
Extenders work with vests that close with snaps. The leather pair lists universal black snap hardware that fits most vest closures, and the Buffalo Nickel pair is listed for standard snap vests. If your vest has a hidden-snap or zipper front, check fit with us before you order.
Are vest extenders better than side lacing?
They do different jobs. Side lacing adjusts the chest width, and on Legendary USA vests that lacing allows 2 to 4 inches of adjustment. Extenders add front-opening room for a seasonal layer. Loosen the lacing first, then add extenders if you still need room.
