Sheepskin · The Early-War Reproduction

The B-3 as it looked
when the war began.

Before wartime production standardized the B-3, the early jackets had their own character — russet coloring, a horsehide map pocket, horsehide-reinforced sleeves, shoulder tabs. Cockpit USA patterns this reproduction after the rare early-1942 examples issued to Army Air Force bomber crews, and builds it the same way: hand-selected antiqued pelts, each with unique shading and grain, so every jacket is one of one. Heavy latigo leather belting, square antique-brass buckles engraved with the Cockpit logo, and the WWII-era AAF decal on the left sleeve. Made in the USA.

The Material

Two hides,
as issued.

Sheepskin does the warmth; horsehide does the wear. The early-war B-3s reinforced their sleeves and cut their map pocket from horsehide, and this reproduction does the same.

The antiqued russet pelts are hand-selected for individual grain and shading — one-of-one by material, before construction even begins.

Reproduction is
a discipline.

It would be cheaper to standardize the pelts and skip the horsehide. Cockpit doesn't — because the variation and the reinforcement are what made the early jackets what they were.
